What is Somatic Experiencing®?*
Somatic Experiencing® (SETM) is a body-based approach to trauma healing, developed by Dr. Peter Levine. It integrates principles from physiology, psychology, neuroscience, ethology, biology, and Indigenous healing practices to help regulate the nervous system and release stored trauma.
SETM is grounded in the understanding that wild animals often survive life-threatening experiences without trauma. They do this by naturally completing and discharging high-energy survival responses (such as fight or flight), returning to a state of balance-known in SETM as coherence.

This therapy helps to complete these survival responses in humans, allowing unresolved stress energy to be released from the body. With support, clients learn to increase their capacity to be present with challenging sensations, emotions, and thoughts—gently and at a pace that avoids overwhelm.

SETM uses body awareness, and a process called titration (breaking down experiences into small steps) to renegotiate trauma, rather than relive it. The aim is to reset your nervous system and support a deeper sense of embodiment and regulation.

Note: SETM sessions may include or exclude touch.
What are Somatic Experiencing® Touch Therapy Sessions at CPYC?

SETM Touch Therapy involves intentional and respectful physical contact to support regulation and healing. Touch may be direct (hands, forearm, or foot contact) or indirect (through cushions or bolsters). Unlike massage, SETM Touch is not manipulative and is always done fully clothed.

This therapeutic use of touch was developed by Dr. Peter Levine and further refined by Kathy Kain, MA, SEP. Sarah Kinsley received two years of training in SETM with Dea Parsanishi and completed her third year with Kathy Kain. Sarah has been a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner (SEP) since 2018.

Touch may be integrated while you are seated, lying face-up, or standing during movement work. Bolsters, pillows, and blankets are used to ensure your comfort. Common contact areas include the kidneys, adrenal glands, head, neck, shoulders, joints, and feet.

What to Expect: Consent, Safety, and Boundaries

-
Sarah will explore with you whether touch is appropriate
-
You will have full control over the use of touch, including where, how much pressure, for how long, and proximity.
-
All boundaries will be clearly discussed before and during the session.
-
You can withdraw consent at any time, for any reason, with no need to justify.
-
Physical responses like shaking, trembling, fatigue, or energy shifts are normal and part of the body’s release process.
-
Sexual touch is strictly prohibited—it is both unethical and illegal.

Psychedelic Assisted Therapy Sessions
Sarah Kinsley has completed an 8-month post-graduate certificate in Psychedelic-Assisted Therapies at Naropa University in Colorado, USA. This training allows Sarah to support clients with both preparation and integration as they engage in Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy, including experiences with Psilocybin and Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP). She intends to bring warmth, safety, and guidance to the process, so you feel supported at every stage of your journey.
Preparation Sessions
Before beginning Psychedelic Assisted Therapy, preparation is an essential part of the process. These sessions provide a safe and supportive space to clarify your intentions, explore your hopes and concerns, and develop grounding practices that will help you navigate the experience with openness. Together, we’ll discuss what to expect, build trust in the therapeutic relationship, and establish a framework for integrating insights that may arise. Preparation is about cultivating safety, readiness, and intention—ensuring you feel supported every step of the way.
Integration Sessions
Integration is about taking the time to make meaning from your psychedelic experience and gently bringing what you’ve learned into your daily life. After your experience, you may notice new insights, shifts in perspective, or strong emotions—sometimes exciting, sometimes overwhelming. In our sessions, I offer a safe and supportive space to reflect on what has come up, explore any challenges, and discover ways to carry your insights forward with clarity and compassion. Together, we’ll find practical tools and practices—such as journaling, mindfulness, or grounding techniques—that help you anchor your experience. My role is to walk alongside you as you integrate, ensuring you feel supported, resourced, and empowered in the process.
